Press Release Body = The Costa del Sol - which translates as the Sunshine Coast - is a coastal region in the south of Spain which encompasses parts of Malaga and Cadiz. The area was originally quite sparsely populated and rural, with much of the local economy centred on the fishing industry. However, the latter half of the 20 th century - particularly from the 1970s onwards - saw the Costa del Sol gain international renown as a tourist resort.
As a result, a huge amount of development work was undertaken. The region is now a major holiday destination and is home to a huge amount of hotels, apartments and chalets. The local economy is now massively dependent on the millions of tourists that visit every year. Marbella, one of the towns on the Costa del Sol, is famous as a playground for the rich, who spend vast sums in its restaurants and nightclubs every year. Many also take time out to enjoy one of the numerous golf courses in the area, of which there are more than fifty.
According to Chris McCarthy, a property consultant who specialises in the Costa del Sol region, there has never been a better time to invest in a property in the area. He points out that there are increasing numbers of tourists arriving every year. This is despite the fact that the area has been a major tourist destination for over 40 years. Many areas enjoy popularity for a few years and then are passed over in favour of the latest fashionable resort, but this has not happened with the Costa del Sol.
Malaga airport, which handles most of the incoming tourist traffic, processes 12 million arrivals and departures each year - and that number is growing annually. A new runway has recently been added and this will allow the facility to handle up to 20 million passengers a year from 2008. At the same time, the railway infrastructure is being developed to allow for easier travel across the whole region.
The region is not just popular with holidaymakers. It has also seen an increasing number of people from all over Europe relocate there to take advantage of the 320 days of sunshine it enjoys each year. As Mr McCarthy says: \"The Costa del Sol is no longer simply a holiday destination, it is also a vibrant, developing residential area that tens of thousands of European and Spanish nationals aspire to live in and relocate to.\"
